18-8 / 304 Stainless Steel Fasteners in Toronto
18-8 and 304 stainless screws, bolts, nuts, washers and threaded rod — the general-purpose corrosion-resistant fastener for exterior construction and fabrication across the GTA.
The General-Purpose Stainless Standard.
18-8 refers to roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. Most 18-8 fasteners are made from 304 stainless, and the terms are used interchangeably in the trade.
It is the go-to grade for exterior work without heavy salt exposure: better corrosion resistance than plated steel, at a lower cost than 316.

18-8 vs Other Stainless Grades
| Grade | Corrosion Resistance | When To Use It |
|---|---|---|
| 18-8 / 304 | Good | General exterior construction, cladding, trim and fabrication |
| 316 | Excellent — chloride resistant | Upgrade when salt, pools or the lakefront are involved |
| 410 | Moderate — hardened | Self-drilling into steel framing |
Where It Gets Used
- Exterior cladding, siding and trim
- Window, door and glazing assembly
- Fences, gates and general decking
- HVAC, signage and electrical mounting
- Fabrication and equipment assembly
Spec It Right
- Step up to 316 if the fastener will see road salt, pool water or the lakefront
- 18-8 cannot drill steel framing — use 410 self-drilling screws there
- Match nuts and washers to 18-8 to avoid mixed-metal corrosion
- Lubricate threads to prevent galling on stainless assemblies
